About the drone zones¶
What are drone zones?¶
Drone zones are geographically defined areas in Denmark where special rules apply to drone flights. The zones are established by the Danish Transport Authority in accordance with the EU Drone Regulation and the Danish drone order.
The drone zones protect airports, military installations, sensitive buildings, nature areas and other locations where drone flights may pose a safety risk.
The three zone types¶
🔴 Red zone — Flight safety critical¶
Red zones surround airports and other flight safety critical installations. Drone flights are prohibited here without prior permission from the relevant authority.
Examples:
- Control zones (CTR) around airports
- Flight safety critical installations
- Approach corridors
Rules: You must apply for permission before flying. Contact the relevant air traffic control unit.
🟠 Orange zone — Awareness¶
Orange zones mark areas where drone pilots must be especially alert. Flying may be permitted, but with extra precautions.
Examples:
- Heliports and helicopter landing sites
- Areas with frequent low-flying traffic
- Military exercise areas
Rules: Check the specific rules for the area in question before flying.
🔵 Blue zone — Security critical¶
Blue zones surround sensitive locations that require protection against unauthorised surveillance or intrusion.
Examples:
- Prisons and detention centres
- Police stations
- Embassies
- Royal residences
- Power plants and critical infrastructure
Rules: Drone flights are subject to special restrictions. Check the applicable rules.
🟢 Green zone — Nature areas¶
Green zones mark protected nature areas where drone flights may be prohibited during certain periods. Some areas are active all year round, others only in specific seasons — e.g. during breeding season. The dataset indicates whether an area is active on a given day.

Data quality and updates¶
- Data is updated regularly by the Danish Transport Authority
- The latest data can always be downloaded from the download page
- Always check the official interactive map before flying
- Geodata is based on the current drone order
Important
Geodata is for guidance only. It is always the pilot's responsibility to ensure that flying is legal in the area in question. Check the official map and applicable rules before every flight.
